The Lukewarm Church; Revelation 3:14-22

Now we come to the one verse in this chapter that almost every one of us has heard, but perhaps not understood in the correct context.

Revelation 3:20, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”

Most of us have seen the famous painting of Christ standing and knocking on a door in a garden. We think of this as Christ knocking on the door of an unbeliever’s heart. This is certainly a true representation of what the Holy Spirit does. He leads us to Christ who knocks on the door of our heart. He is waiting for us to open the door and let Him in.

This verse, however, understood in the correct context is about Jesus standing at the door of a CHURCH and knocking, hoping to be let in to that church.

This verse saddens me more than any other verse in the Bible. Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God, is standing at the door of a church which claims to be based on His Word, but has never let Him in.
